Sunday Group Rides - Please sign up to navigate!

Postby Rob Harvey » Thu Oct 04, 2007 7:33 pm

Sunday rides will begin again on 14th October for all members of Manchester Triathlon Club and non members with a view to join the club. There will be four groups each week to cater for the wide range of abilities that we have in the club. Ride coordinators will plan and publish the routes in advance and each week group navigators will be appointed.

Group 1 - Offers a leisurely paced ride at the speed of the slowest person. All riders are welcome as long as they are confident to ride on the open road. Basic group riding skills are required.

Group 2 - Is a bridge between Group 1 and 3. Rides should be a challenge for people looking to move up from Group 1 and an alternative for Group 3 riders. Varying skill levels and abilities will be accommodated; so group riding skills are required. 20-30 kmph on flats.

Group 3 - For the fitter, more experienced riders who are able to closely follow a wheel and go through and off at speed. 30+ kmph on flats.

Early Birds - An alternative ride for early risers leaves from The Bridge Inn, Dane Road, Sale. This is suitable for stronger group 2 and group 3 riders only. 25+ kmph on flats.

All riders participate at their own risk and must always ride in accordance with the highway code. Manchester Triathlon Club are affiliated to British Cycling and strongly advise you to consider the Silver or Gold insurance offered by British Cycling. Preferential rates are available for first year members. Click here for more information

http://www.britishcycling.org.uk/web/si ... nefits.asp

This year’s ride coordinators are:
Group 1 - Andy Fardon - 07711 102570
Group 2 - Guy Dobson
Group 3 - Vacant
Early Birds - Tim Johns

To ensure the success of these rides, we NEED volunteers to help navigate them. Below is a list of volunteers so far. If you would be willing to navigate the occasional ride, please add your name to this thread with your preferred date and group.

What does the ride navigator need to do?

Learn the suggested route provided by the Group Coordinator or plan your own if you prefer.
If you plan your own route then save it online using - gmap-pedometer - http://www.gmap-pedometer.com
If you plan your own route email the route information to the Group Coordinator the week before the ride so it can be advertised.
Bring an additional inner tube in case of emergency.
Turn up 10 minutes early and in the right meeting place!
Introduce yourself to non members that have a view to joining the club.
Navigate on behalf of the group around the route.

Routes

Each week we will post a thread with the routes for the following Sunday so that you can decide which group you want to go out with and print it off as well.

The Sunday rides are a great way to maintain fitness and motivation over the winter months as well as a chance to meet other members. The routes will be varied around steady, long, hilly and interval rides (see below for more details) to keep thing interesting and make the most of the fantastic countryside surrounding Manchester.

We look forward to hearing from lots of volunteer navigators and seeing you all on the 14th.

Andy, Guy & Charlie

Ride Types

Steady

For Group 1 this is a good introduction to group rides.
For Group 2 and 3 it means not too hilly, not too long and not too fast.

Long

Flat or rolling terrain. Distance / Time in the saddle is the focus.

Interval

The ride will include 1+ structured period/s of work. This could either be hill intervals or chain gang.

Challenge

Long and hilly. As the name suggests that little bit harder than the group is used to. The route could be based on a British Cycling or CTC Sportive ride.
