Sunday Rides - 08/09 - SIGN UP TO NAVIGATE!

Postby Rob Harvey » Tue Sep 09, 2008 10:50 pm

Evening,

Get your diaries at the ready...... Sunday rides will begin again on 12th October. The rides are open to all MTC members as well as non members looking to join the club. We will be aiming for three or four groups each week to cater for the wide range of abilities that we have in the club. We have some ride coordinators in place who will be helping make sure thinks go smoothly but we NEED YOUR HELP. We want every club member to volunteer to lead a ride. Read on for more details......

The Groups

Group 1:
Offers a leisurely paced ride at the speed of the slowest person. All riders are welcome as this group is targeted at those new to triathlon / cycling who are looking to build confidence on the road. The rides will be social and a good way to get a feel for the club hopefully with plenty of members on hand to help out.

Range: 20-30 miles
Time: 1.5-2.5 hours max
Variety: 4-5 different routes

Group 2:
Is a bridge between Group 1 and 3 for more established cyclists. Rides should be a challenge for people looking to move up from Group 1 and an alternative for Group 3 riders. Varying skill levels and abilities will be accommodated; so group riding skills are required.

Range: 40-65 miles
Time: 2.5-4 hours
Variety: 6-8 different routes

Group 3:
Hold onto your pants as it could well be quick! For the fitter, more experienced riders who are able to closely follow a wheel and go through and off at speed. 30+ kmph on flats.

Range: 50+
Time: 3 hours +
Variety: Lots of different routes

Early Birds:
An alternative ride for early risers leaves from The Bridge Inn, Dane Road, Sale. This is suitable for stronger group 2 and group 3 riders only. 25+ kmph on flats.

Range: 40-65 miles
Time: 2.5-4 hours
Variety: 6-8 different routes

Ride Coordinators:

This year’s ride coordinators are:
Group 1 - Martyn Cornish
Group 2 - Andy Fardon - 07711 102570
Group 3 - Daniel McParland
Early Birds - Tim Johns

To ensure the success of these rides, we NEED volunteers to help navigate them. Below is a list of volunteers so far. If you would be willing to navigate the occasional ride, please add your name to this thread with your preferred date and group.

What does the ride navigator need to do?

Learn the suggested route provided by the Group Coordinator or plan your own if you prefer.
If you plan your own route then save it online using - gmap-pedometer - http://www.gmap-pedometer.com
If you plan your own route email the route information to the Group Coordinator the week before the ride so it can be advertised.
Bring an additional inner tube in case of emergency.
Turn up 10 minutes early and in the right meeting place!
Introduce yourself to non members that have a view to joining the club.
Navigate on behalf of the group around the route.

Re: Sunday Rides - 08/09 - SIGN UP TO NAVIGATE!

Postby daniel.mcparland » Thu Sep 11, 2008 12:38 pm

I've now confirmed with Rob that I'll be the Group 3 ride coordinator for this year.

I'm hoping that more people will get involved with Group 3 this winter it's not as hard/fast as people imagine and there are many in the club perfectly capable of coming along so hopefully we will get more out than last year. In my experience the hardest rides are always with the EBs, perhaps they should be called Group 4?!?

To kick things off I'll volunteer to navigate the following dates:

12/10
02/11
07/12
04/01
01/02
01/03
05/04

Cheers

Daniel

I'm happy to lead a few group two rides, providing people are happy to bear with my navigational skills! A planned 40 miles could either become 60 or 20.

Routes can be planned for you which will include written directions as well as maps.

In that case, I can navigate a couple of group 2 rides too.

Happy to navigate some Sunday rides for Early birds, not sure of dates, but probably just co-ordinate with Tim.

Group 1 - 12/10, 2/11 to start with for me.

Plan for group 1 is to have 4/5 different routes which we can work through in rotation.

E.g.
1st Sunday of month - 35km gentle - Bramhall, Alderly, Wilmslow, Styal
2nd Sunday of month - 40km little further - Hale, Mobberly, Wilmslow, Styal - incl. part of the Wilmslow Tri bike route
3rd Sunday of month - 40km with burst of hard work at half way - Bramhall, Poynton, Handforth
4th Sunday of month - 45km flat - Tatton ish direction

And when there are 5 Sundays in a month, we can do something a little different/special maybe.... stay tuned.

Are we still having a newbie bike skills session before starting up again?

I'll take any tips going!
